ptoil ("Play That One I Like") is a small, personal app for keeping track of the songs you play at a jam and suggesting what to play next. This page explains what information we collect and how it's used.
Information we collect
- Account information — your name, email address, and profile image, provided by whichever sign-in method you choose (Google, Facebook, or a magic-link email). We don't see or store your password for these providers.
- Your song library — the song titles you add, any tags you create, and your upvote/downvote on each song. This is private to your account by default.
- Share tokens — if you generate a QR code to compare your library with another user, we create a short-lived token linking to your library so that comparison can happen. It expires automatically and isn't shared beyond the person who scans it.
- Basic usage analytics — we use PostHog to understand which pages and features get used, so we know what's worth improving.
How we use it
Solely to run the app: authenticating you, storing and displaying your own song library, matching similarly-phrased song titles across the shared catalog so shuffle and comparison work well, and understanding usage to improve the product. We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.
Cookies and local storage
- Sign-in cookies — a few
next-auth.*cookies that keep you signed in. These are essential and httpOnly (JavaScript can't read them), and are only set once you sign in. - Analytics cookie — PostHog sets a cookie to recognize repeat visits for the usage analytics described above.
- Preferences in localStorage — small, non-account settings like dark mode and whether to show tags in shuffle results, stored in your browser so they persist across visits without a server round-trip.
- Offline library cache — if you use the app offline, we cache your song library in your browser's IndexedDB storage so it's still available without a connection, syncing back once you're online again.
None of this is used for advertising, and clearing your browser's site data for ptoil removes all of it (you'll just need to sign in again and reconnect once you're back online).
Data retention and deletion
Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data (library, tags, votes, and any share tokens) at any time — see our data deletion instructions.
